What's the difference between a politician and a prostitute?
One sells his/her time for favors, and the other... well sells his/her time for favors :)
But all kidding aside, the recent furor over Spitzer's 'links to prostitution' has cemented my opinion for its decriminalization. Now before you blow a gasket, let me first explain the activity that I'm advocating for - the sale or exchange of sexual services for money/gifts, between consenting adults, conducted in private.
I don't deny that prostitution arose out of misogyny. Married elite Greek men of past used to enjoy the company of a class of educated women (heterae) as an escape from their wives who were isolated from the outside world as they were required to stay home. These elite male Athenians sought intellectual discourse, and as it was lacking in the home, found it in the company of the heterae.
